This unique composting system uses the revolutionary EM (Effective Micro-Organism) Bokashi to create the ideal conditions for airtight (anaerobic) composting.
The system eliminates the odours associated with putrefaction and decay by fermenting the waste so that it 'pickles' rather than rots.
You can compost almost every kitchen food waste in your Bokashi Kitchen Composter including plate scrapings and foods that earthworms do not like.
The key to the success of this system is the specifically designed Bokashi Kitchen Composter, and the use of EM Bokashi. Bokashi is a Japanese term that means “fermented organic matter". EM Bokashi is a pleasant smelling product made using a combination of wheat bran that has been infused with Effective Micro-organisms (EM). EM Bokashi has traditionally been used to increase the microbial diversity and activity in soils and to supply nutrients to plants. How it works
When you start using the Kitchen Composter, you sprinkle a thin layer of Bokashi Bran over the seive plate inside the composter.
Place your kitchen waste into the Kitchen Composter, then sprinkle a hand full of EM Bokashi over the waste.
The process works best if the food is cut or broken into smaller peices and kept quite dry. Mix the Bokashi Bran in and compress the mix with an old spatula or convenient object.
Repeat this layering process until the Kitchen Composter is full.
Drain off the liquid (Bokashi juice) from the tap in the recessed base of the Kitchen Composter into a suitable container.
This liquid can be watered down 1:100 and fed to plants. It is rich in nutrients and beneficial organisms that improve the health of the soil and plants.
It can also be used to take away offensive odours in drains. The microorganisms also break down slime and other organic matter in drains, helping to keep them clear and free of blockages.
Once the Kitchen Composter is full to capacity, the waste can be buried.
If you have two Bokashi Kitchen Composters, begin the process again in your second Kitchen Composter and let the the first Kitchen Composter continue to ferment for 10-14 days.
Then, bury the waste and wash out Kitchen Composter so that it is ready to use when your second Kitchen Composter is full.
If you have only one Kitchen Composter the waste can be buried as soon as it is full. Obviously the waste on the top will not have had much chance to ferment, but even so, the waste will still break down quickly because of the micro-organisms mixed in.
Bokashi Compost will look different to other compost as the food waste does not breakdown or decompose while it is in the bucket. It retains much of its original physical properties and will have a pickled appearance. Breakdown of waste will occur after it has been transferred to the soil.
The Kitchen Composter is made from minimum 75% post-consumer recycled plastic.
Dimensions: 310mm x 310mm wide, 410mm tall
The system comes with a starter bag of Bokashi Bran. You will need to purchase a bag of Bokashi Bran every 8 weeks or so (depending on how much waste you have).
These can be ordered via our website and will shortly be available via selected retailers.
